In Bharuch town, rooftop solar panels need cleaning about once a month, with an extra wash after dust storms. Near the chemical estates of Ankleshwar, Panoli and Dahej, clean every two weeks in the dry season, because industrial dust and soot build up faster. Use soft water and a soft brush early in the morning, and keep an eye on your monthly generation, which tells you more about the health of your system than any visual check.

A cleaning calendar for Bharuch

Bharuch has four distinct seasons for solar. March to May is peak generation and peak dust. The Narmada monsoon runs from June to September, with heavy rain and cloudy weeks that pull output down in July and August. October and November bring the first clear skies and the dirtiest panels of the year. Winter is dry, with morning dew that turns dust into paste.

Summer is when a dirty panel costs you most, because it is also when your AC runs hardest. The post-monsoon clean is the one most people skip. Rain leaves a thin line of mud and algae along the lower frame, and on a tilted panel that line sits right across the bottom row of cells.

Industrial dust near Ankleshwar and Dahej

Homes and factories close to Ankleshwar GIDC, Panoli and Dahej deal with a different kind of dirt. The fine dust from chemical estates is often greasy and does not blow off. Soot from boilers and stacks leaves a grey film that plain rain does not shift. On these roofs, a fortnightly clean in the dry season is reasonable, compared with monthly in Bharuch town.

Dahej and the coastal belt around Vagra and Jambusar add salt from the Gulf of Khambhat. Salt settles on the glass as a haze and attacks steel. Coastal roofs need hot-dip galvanised or aluminium structures with stainless steel fasteners. Rinse salt off with soft water before brushing, so the crystals do not scratch the glass. Our posts on rooftop solar in Ankleshwar and factory solar in Panoli and Dahej GIDC cover these sites in more detail.

How to clean panels safely

Cleaning is simple, but the roof and the water choice are where people go wrong.

  1. Clean early in the morning, before the glass heats up. Cold water on hot glass is a thermal shock, and water evaporates too fast on a hot panel and leaves marks.
  2. Rinse first with a gentle flow from a hose or bucket to lift loose dust.
  3. Brush with a soft, long-handled brush or a sponge mop, working from top to bottom.
  4. Rinse again and, if your water is hard, wipe dry with a clean rubber squeegee.
  5. Stay on the walkway or the roof slab. Never stand, kneel or lean on the panels.
  6. Keep water away from the inverter, the DC and AC boxes and cable junctions.

Things to avoid are just as important. No pressure washers, since they can force water past seals and damage the frame. No detergent, soap or chemical cleaners, which leave a film that attracts more dust. No scraping with anything metal or abrasive. If your panels sit on a sloped roof or an elevated structure you cannot reach safely from the slab, do not climb. Call us instead.

Water hardness matters in Bharuch

Many homes in and around Bharuch use borewell water, and much of it is hard. When hard water dries on glass it leaves white calcium scale. That scale blocks light much like dust does, and it does not come off with a second wash. Over months it builds into a crust.

The best options are RO-filtered water from the house purifier line, or rainwater stored in a drum during the monsoon. If borewell water is the only option, rinse and immediately squeegee the glass dry, so drops do not sit and evaporate. Never use RO reject water. It carries all the salts the purifier removed, so it is harder than the tap water you started with.

What our five years of free maintenance covers

Every residential system we install comes with five years of free maintenance, with our own team visiting once a quarter. We do not use subcontractors. A quarterly check is where we catch the things you cannot see from the roof edge.

  • Generation compared with what your system should make for that month
  • Inverter readings and its error log
  • Panel surfaces for cracks, hot spots and heavy soiling
  • Mounting structure, clamps and fasteners, and rust on coastal sites
  • DC and AC cables, conduit and cable ties
  • Earthing and lightning protection
  • Fuses, MCBs and surge protection in the distribution boxes

Routine washing between visits is usually done by the owner or a helper. We are happy to show you the right way on the roof itself. Ask at quote stage what the maintenance covers for your particular site.

Generation reports on WhatsApp

The best early warning is the number of units your system makes. We send monthly generation reports on WhatsApp to every residential customer, so a drop does not go unnoticed for months. As Rakesh Patel in Zadeshwar told us, “Installed in one day. They send generation reports on WhatsApp every month.”

In Bharuch, a well-kept system averages about 4.2 units per kWp per day across the year. Clear days in March to May sit above that. Cloudy monsoon weeks sit well below.

Array sizeAverage units per dayAverage units per month
2.2 kWp~9.2~281
3.3 kWp~13.9~421
4.4 kWp~18.5~562
5.5 kWp~23.1~702
6.6 kWp~27.7~843

Compare each month with the same month last year rather than with the month before. July will always look worse than April. A steady drop against last year, with no change in weather, usually means dirt, shade or a fault.

Signs of a fault

Some problems are not about dirt at all. These are the signs that need a call to us rather than a bucket of water.

  • Low generation on a clear, sunny day even after a proper clean
  • An error code on the inverter display, such as a grid fault, over-voltage or isolation fault
  • An isolation or earth fault that appears after heavy rain, which points to moisture in a cable joint or junction box
  • The solar MCB or RCCB tripping repeatedly
  • A blank inverter display during daylight
  • The net meter showing no export on sunny afternoons when the house is using little power

An inverter that trips in the afternoon with a grid over-voltage message is shutting down to protect itself. It restarts on its own when the voltage settles, but if it happens often it needs checking. Remember too that an on-grid inverter switches off during a power cut. That is a safety design, not a fault. Our on-grid vs hybrid vs off-grid post explains why.

Bird droppings and pigeons

Bird droppings are a bigger problem than dust. A single dropping covers a few cells completely. Those cells stop producing and can heat up into hot spots, which age the panel faster. Rain does not wash droppings off. Soak them with water for a few minutes, then wipe gently. Do not scrape.

Pigeons are a common nuisance on Bharuch roofs. The shaded gap under a panel array is an ideal nesting spot. Nests collect twigs, feathers and droppings around the cables, and birds on the frame mean more droppings on the glass. A galvanised or coated wire mesh fixed around the edges of the array keeps them out without touching the panels or the wiring. Clear any nests first. Ask about mesh at quote stage so it is planned into the layout. Our guide on choosing a solar installer in Bharuch lists other questions worth asking before you sign.

Questions people ask

How often should solar panels be cleaned in Bharuch?

In Bharuch town, once a month is enough for most of the year, with an extra wash after a dust storm. Near the Ankleshwar, Panoli and Dahej chemical estates, clean every two weeks in the dry months because industrial dust and soot settle faster. During the monsoon the rain does part of the work, but check for bird droppings and mud splashes.

Can I clean solar panels with borewell water?

It is better not to. Borewell water around Bharuch is often hard, and it dries into a white scale that blocks sunlight and is difficult to remove. Use RO-filtered water or stored rainwater, a soft brush and no detergent. If hard water is all you have, wipe the glass dry with a clean squeegee straight after rinsing. Never use RO reject water, which is even saltier.

Do solar panels need cleaning during the monsoon?

Less often, but still yes. Rain washes loose dust, yet it leaves streaks and pushes dirt down to the lower edge of each panel. Bird droppings do not wash off in rain. Check the panels every two or three weeks during June to September, and do a full clean in October once the rains end.

What does Active Solar House's free maintenance include?

Every residential system we install gets five years of free maintenance with a check every quarter. Our own team looks at generation against expected output, inverter readings and error logs, panel surfaces, structure and fasteners, wiring and earthing. Ask at quote stage what is included for your roof. Monthly generation reports on WhatsApp are part of the service too.

Why is my solar generation suddenly low?

The common causes are dirty panels, cloudy weather, a new shadow from a tree or building, a tripped MCB, or the inverter shutting down on a grid fault or high grid voltage. Check the inverter display for an error code and compare today's units with a clear day last week. If generation stays low on sunny days after cleaning, call your installer.

How do I stop pigeons nesting under solar panels?

Fit a galvanised or coated wire mesh around the gap between the panel edges and the roof. It keeps pigeons from nesting underneath without touching the panels or wiring. Remove any existing nests and droppings before the mesh goes on. Planning the mesh at installation time is easier and neater than adding it later.
